Traveling Around the World
9th-12th Grade Concert Band
1 Week Unit
May 13, 2011

Unit Goal: Students will take a virtual field trip exploring the world’s finest orchestras and symphonies. Students will blog about their experience and explain in detail the music they discovered and how it affected them.

CA Content Standards:
- 3.5 Compare and contrast instruments from a variety of cultures and historical periods.
- 3.7 Analyze the stylistic features of a given musical work that define its aesthetic traditions and its historical or cultural context.
- 4.1 Compare and contrast how a composer's intentions result in a work of music and how that music is used.
- 4.2 Analyze and explain how and why people in a particular culture use and respond to specific musical works from their own culture.

Student Actions
- Create blog (this will be used as a travel journal).

- Visit websites.
- Explore bios of conductor/performers. How old or young do most of the players look? What is the ethnic make-up of the ensemble?
- Listen to/watch video of orchestra performing.
- Explore calendar of events and discuss programming. Is all of the programming Western music? Are any traditional pieces being played?
- Read your colleagues blogs and comment on their experiences.

Assessment
Students’ blogs should be detailed descriptions of each symphony’s website and should answer all of the questions found under the Student Actions section. Students should write in complete sentences with proper grammar and sentence structure.

- Where all the websites visited?
- Is there thoughtful discussion about each symphony's website?
- Did students discuss any traditional music found on the websites?





Instrument History

Unit Goal: Students will explore the history of their instruments and create an online time line outlining their instruments history.

Students will explore the following websites;
- Delicious

- teAchnology
http://www.teach-nology.com/web_tools/materials/timelines/

Student Actions
- Using at least four websites found through Delicious, research the history of your instrument.
- Be sure to answer the following questions;
- When was it invented?
- Who invented it?
- What does the name mean?
- What advances have been made upon it?
- If possible, find a picture of the original instrument.
- Go to http://www.teach-nology.com/web_tools/materials/timelines/.
- Follow the directions to create a timeline outlining the history of your instrument.
- Include as much historical information as possible.
- Site your resources.
- Present your timeline to the class.

Assessment
- Did students use at least four websites?
- Is the information correct?
- Do the events listed in the timeline follow a chronological order?
